The Gut Matrix
Fibre, Microbes, and Metabolic Mastery
€11.90
Health isn’t static. While it may be described by analysis, it’s not defined by isolated blood markers or quick fixes. It’s a living process, shaped moment by moment by our daily choices, our inner biology, and our connection to the environments we inhabit.
The Gut Matrix maps one of the most powerful intersections of that process: how fibre, microbiota, and tryptophan metabolism orchestrate resilience across systems, from gut to brain, immunity to longevity. What begins as dietary fibre becomes a chemical conversation between microbes and cells, shaping everything from mood to inflammation, cognition to cancer resistance. Beyond the science of this book lies something more enduring: the idea that health is a partnership. One between you and your microbiome. You and your fork. You and your future.
About the Authors:
Dr Colin Robertson is an exercise and nutrition scientist who has spent the past 30 years working in high-performance sport, clinical exercise physiology, and sports science research. He is a member of the Chartered Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences, and an accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach and Kinan Thropometrist. He has studied at Oxford, Liverpool, Glamorgan, and Liverpool John Moores Universities, and is currently a visiting Professor at the University of Lancashire. He has trained and tested Olympic athletes who competed at the Beijing, London, Rio, and Tokyo games, he has worked in Premiership football, and both national and international rugby. As an environmental physiologist, he has prepared several people to climb Everest, row across the Atlantic Ocean, race across the Sahara Desert, and trek to both the North and South poles. He is a founder and director of the UTS gym (Wirral, UK), and UTS Live Well Foundation (supporting people during their recovery from cancer). He is also the Director of Science and Research for Battle Cancer and is the Education Director for CAWS and the Common Knowledge Podcast.
Dr Martina Torrissen is a nutrition and biosciences researcher whose work bridges molecular nutrition, lipid metabolism, and gut–microbiome science. She holds a BSc and MSc in Nutrition, the latter completed at Karolinska Institute through Stockholm University, and a PhD in Animal and Aquacultural Sciences from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Her doctoral work, conducted in collaboration with industry and research partners, focused on the biological functions of very-long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (VLC-PUFAs) and their distinct physiological roles in tissue integrity, skin health, and bone mineralisation.
Her research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, with two papers nominated for Paper of the Year in the British Journal of Nutrition.
She is a co-inventor on a patent for VLC-PUFAs and author of the largest global study on omega-3 fatty acid status to-date, analysing data from more than half a million blood samples. Dr Torrissen currently leads scientific innovation in the development of at-home health testing, including novel frameworks that assess gut microbial activity and metabolism through blood-based analysis. Her first book, The Gut Metabolite Connection, provides the scientific foundation for The Gut Matrix, translating cutting-edge bioscience into accessible insight for preventive and personalised health.
